Jim Dine

For a fun and quick one day Valentine's project students learned about the artist Jim Dine and how to blend oil pastels.  We also talked about warm vs. cool color and tint, shade and tone. Here are the results.

Ink and Colored Pencil Still Life

Students drew from direct observation to create this lesson.  They chose an interesting position and sketched the still life in pencil first.  Then students chose certain sections to add color too and lightly traced circles (they could use two different sizes)  to contain the area, being aware of keeping balance in their compositions.  Before adding color students completed value scales in order to understand how to create value using tone, shade, and tint to prismacolors.  Students then used sharpies to draw the contour lines of their still life drawings.

Kaleidoscope Lettering Design

For 7th and 8th grade students we started off the new semester with a lesson incorporating our names into a design.  We started the lesson discussing the Elements of Art and Principles of Designs that can be found in the examples provided.

Then we discussed Op Artists Victor Vasarely and Bridget Riley and familiarized ourselves with their works of art.  Students then took a triangle of paper and created block letters of their names and traced it onto their papers flipping and rotating as they went in order to create a radial design.

Students could use solid colors to complete their pieces or use patterns. The results are outstanding!

Radial Name Designs

For the second semester of art we started with names.  Students created an Op Art piece incorporating their name drawn in a radial design.  Students could use solid colors or create patterns in their design.  I also familiarized students with the work of Op Artists Bridget Riley and Victor Vasarely and reviewed what Elements of Art and Principles of Designs can be found in each example.
